gearmatic 19 winch

have a gearmatic 19 winch on a td8e int. if you are familiar with them they have a master control that works the winch. they can cause problems. does any one know if you can change them by using a hydraulic valve, thanks

My first thoughts are why but I don't think the internal part of the winch would stand hydraulic pressure. What you do when you move the lever is work the master cylinder and move just a squirt of fluid. I never have had much problem with the controls. Only problems is when the winch is NOT used. Clean the master cylinder up, install a rebuild kit and use it or at least hit the controls with the engine off and I think you can overcome your adversity to the problem .

everything has been rebuilt, canny get pressure to release brake. clutch part works good, rebuilt master cylinder, clutch and brake cylinders were rebuilt. brake part wont pump up. can you answer the question about changing them over to hydraulic control instead of master cylinder, thanks

Well I kinda answered it in the first part of the reply. I think you will have fluid going everywhere inside the winch. I just do not see the cylinder holding prolonged hydraulic application. I would bet I could adjust the brake in two minutes where your control would work. Something not adjusted right if the brake will not release. But it is yours and if you want to convert it to hydraulic go for it.

There is a brake adjuster on the bottom of the
winch. Large slotted screw about 1 1/4 inch diameter
that adjusts slack in brake band. I would check it
first. We used to weld a large nut on them to make
it easier to adjust.

(quoted from post at 15:17:37 12/24/14) If it sets out in the weather and hasn't been used in a while the band is probably stuck to the drum. Common when not used often.

found the problem we overhauled master cylinder and the end that works brake was stopped up blowed it out and it works fine
