On the off chance you have come across the same type problem one of my drivers is having with his 09 VW Passat, the problem is when parking and manovering into a tight spot there is a hell of a racket coming from the engine, having it checked out the belt tensinor was replaced but the new one it's just as bad if not worse, they now say the harmonic balancer is the reason,I took the belt off and checked all the pulleys for play, the power steering pump feels good, the alternator is free and smooth, the ac is free, the crank pulley looks to be running true, its not easy to grip it but I used a large filter strap and no way is the rubber giving, its nearly 200 from VW,what do you think, the tensioner is jumpimg like crazy when it does it,but its a new OME assembly, what would you go for.

Ps Its a 1.9 TDI HiLine

Yes I have come across the problem, you are very sharp to notice it's worse with the new tensioner it is,you need to remove the alternator and replace the pulley, first find out if he's got the code for the radio and knows how to put it in so you can disconnect the battery,if not carefully remove the hot cable from the alternator and tape it so it does not short out,the alternator is fixed, remove the top bolt and the nut from the bottom long bolt, pull the long bolt to the front it will not come out, turn the alternator till the end of the bolt comes in line with the slot in the bracket and lift the unit out,you now need a long T50 Torx key and a hollow 33 spline socket to undo the pulley, with the T50 key in the shaft to stop it from turning, slide the spline socket over it and into the splines machined into the pulley, hold the key and undo the pulley,it is standard right hand thread, the whole pulley assembly screws off, screw the new one on and just nip it up,fit the dust cap and put the alternator back on,you must have the long bolt in the bottom bracket, put it into the slot and push it through the bracket, secure the alternator.

Thanks Aj I first thought that you were having me on,I took the alternator to the local shop and had them fit a new pulley,I had to say to the guy what's wrong with the old one as it was running true and free,he told me that the freewheel clutch in the pulley was siezed,I would never have guessed that the pulley had a clutch, got it on and buttoned up,it was sixty bucks so not too bad and the guy put it on FOC.
Thanks Again
Ed

Sorry I did not state what would be wrong with the pulley but I was thinking along the lines that you would have know as they are about for quite a while, all is well that ends well.
