Aj, Rock breaker

Aj I got a Montabert 501 breaker fitted to one of my Hitachi's,the breaker has lost power,I spoke to the dealer and he said that more than likely the accumulator diaphragm was punctured and lost the gas and that I had to remove it and take it to them and they would replace the diaphragm and recharge it with gas,I took it off and sure enough the diaphragm has a hole in it but I cannot see why I can't simply just fit a new one and recharge it myself, how can they charge it off the hammer, did I hear him right or do I have to take him the whole breaker.

When you remove the bolts did you notice every second one was a different length, the bottom section of the accumulator is still on the breaker, just prise it off and bring it,the cap and short bolts with you, they will fit the new diaphragm, bolt it together and recharge it,you put it back in place and bolt it up and you are ready to go,that type accumulator has to be off to fill it as it has to go in a special fixture for gassing.

I've charged quite a few hammer, and breaker accumulators, but as AJ says, yours takes a special fixture to do the job. The accumulator doesn't necessarily have to leave the hammer, IF you have the fixture to do it, otherwise your stuck taking it to the dealership to have it done.

I don't know how much they charge to do the job, or how much a charging fixture runs cost wise, but if the hammer belongs to you, and you plan to keep it any length of time, it may pay to get the tooling for yourself. As you've seen, the diaphragms will burst on occasion and, based on what I saw with my customers, do so at the worst possible time. In the end the tooling to charge one usually saves you far more than it costs, in both time and money in the long run.

That said, I hope the link works, if not cut and past the web address. In either case it will net you a copy of the Operation, Parts, and basic service manual for your breaker. It gives all torque specs for the hammer, greasing points, etc. Too it tells you how to tear down, inspect, reassemble, and recharge the accumulator.

Good luck.

Montabert 501 manual

Thanks guys, took the bits to the hammer man and had an exchange one from him as there was no mechanic to do mine and the machine is on hire, got it back on,put the hanger hat back and it's working again, after seeing the equipment for the gassing I won't be bothering with it.
Thanks again

That's why I did not bother explaining about the gassing, that guy probably has a universal filler, there are several types of accumulators that have a filler valve that you just plug in the cylinder connection to and charge them up like pumping a tire, the one I got has vacuum to pull out the air before feeding in the nitrogen, cost an arm and leg, those are good breakers, keep the hoses as short as possible, when the hammer is removed the hoses should be handled with care so dirt can't get in,the smallest piece of grit can puncture the diaphragm, its a good idea to have two old quick break couplings welded to the casing so you can plug the hoses on to them when the hammer is off, that keeps the hoses off the ground and the dirt out, have a lifting eye welded to the machine side of the hammer so when it's picked up it hangs level and when left down it sits on it's back to protects hoses, also put the plastic caps on the machine couplings.
