northern tool supply dozer

Every time I get the catalog I spend an hour
reading about their little dozer. I have 55 acres
and would love to have something small for
improvements. Pushing brush and clearing along the
edges of fields, making better trails through the
woods. Never heavy duty work or long running
times. I am guessing that most will not respond
favorably to this piece of equipment, but has
anyone had any experience with one, Thanks, Ellis

One of these? (click on link below)

I'd want to see it in person and demo it or see one demonstrated first.

There is some feedback on their webpage, not sure if that's worth anything or not, but Northern Tool responded to one of them as I just read.

Keep in mind for the same money, you could get a lot of rental hours, or you could find a decent, small grading tractor, which depending on condition may perform better, D3 Cat, D21,31 Komatsu, Case 450, and those at least may have decent parts support, I've seen nice D3's at different times around here.

All that aside, I'd want to speak to someone who has one of these, see what they think of it, how it performs, reliability, service and parts.

They list an extended warranty or service contract, I'd want to examine that real closely and have them "mock up" at least one or 2 claims, so you know what to expect.

5800 lbs is light, easy transport, 20K, probably can't touch anything new for that price anyway.

Keep an eye on craigslist or other classifieds - I've seen one or two that folks bought, got done with the landscaping (or at least that was the reason given in the ad), and sold for significantly less.

I'd also suggest thinking long and hard about rental. One of the problems with "light use" is "long sitting times" and all the woes that come with it. If you spend $2000 a year on rentals rather than $20,000 on a machine, you can rent the machine that will do the job best and you don't have to store it, take care of it, repair it, rent it in a year you don't need it, etc.

Yep--consider rental or good used---My D3B used cost me $8500 and it can really do a lot of work--its a 15000# machine--80hp

EK,
If you look long enough you may find an older crawler that fits your needs. By accident/want I found an R2 '41 Cat in running order for under two grand from my cousin. Only problem it did not have a blade. Last spring (by accident/want) I stumbled upon a '65 HD3 Allis with blade for about the same cost. Add to each about $500.00 for catch up maintenance. No matter what you buy, it is not assured your purchase is break down free so parts are an issue. Bottom line suggestion, keep looking or rent as mentioned. HTH

Not sure on the dozers but I believe their tractors are made by Jinma which is a china machine. All the feedback I've heard on those is not good.

For a lot less money, have you considered an used skidsteer/compact track loader? Many year-round multiple uses for it and extremely versatile with the many different quick attach tools available to buy or rent. When something breaks, parts will be more readily available and you will have more of a resale market available if you should ever decide to part company with the machine. Also nice to have a pressurized cab with AC and heat.

Would be nice to be able to buy a decent small crawler like that with PTO and 3 point for using on the farm. Not to sure I'd trust the ones from Northern Tool. But something that would be easy to transport, could be used to drill post holes and run a brush hog and lite dozing.

You can find a mighty fine machine from Case, Cat, John Deere, and Liebherr around my parts (northern Canada) for 20 grand.

If that's the budget, I'd get a slightly bigger machine. Hell for 20 g's that'd have paid for my Case 450 crawler loader, repairs, AND the float trailer I use to haul it around! :)

Good luck!

Great little dozer, I own Ford4500TBL, Bobcat
763 and 2 125hp Masseys. never owned any thing but
US made until l bought one 10 years ago. Didn't
want it at the time but bought it to help my Aunt out, my uncle bought one new before he died. You know the rest of the story
Well turned out to be a great little dozer, no
problemms with it at all, the y395
engine, is a long stroke 3cyl diesel with more ci than 350 IH or 1010 JD, and alot more torque I say go for it, also google - CTOA (forums) for more

Hiring someone with a dozer is cheaper than owning if you use one less than 200 hours a year. I own a JD 459 C and I hire a track hoe and a dozer with a tilt blade to do more work than I do myself. Do not rent a machine unless you are an experienced operator with a lot of hours.
