Start up carburetor on 1954 TD9 International runs to rich.

I own a 1954 TD9. I have been having trouble with the carburetor running to rich during startup. I saw something The King OF Obselete had posted, saying not to try to adjust the float as it would break. I just got finished sandblasting and painting over the intake manifold and carburetor as it had not been worked on since I restored the crawler about seven years ago. I can start her up with no trouble, but while in gas mode. it puts out dark black smoke as if it is getting to much gas, but if you cut back on the choke it will shut down. I dont remember it running that rich ,when I finished the crawler. Any comments will be appreceiated. Thanks Eddie

from my experience with these engines, that is quite normal. they do run rich till you get them warmed up on gas then they start picking up rpm. they take a lot of choke to start also then when running I keep the choke out or on half ways till rpm picks up then can push it in all the way. there is an air valve you can adjust inside the carb. my 650 tractor has an extra valve on carb to open for more fuel when starting and cold and it helps as you don't have to keep the choke half way out. I believe its just the nature of these beasts cause that tiny carb is just for engine warm up and starting and the gas sure goes through them. it is a very good system but I also believe this is what turned people away from these tractors.

I cleaned out the sediment bowl, and bought some fresh non ethelnol gas, then I cranked it up and let it run for awhile in the gas mode. I think I had not been letting it warm up long enough, as it smoothed out well, and the rpm's picked up as they should. Thanks for your comments. wolive

that's good. yes in cooler weather run on gas for 2-3 minutes and the rpm will max out once its warm, and smoke will go away also.
