JD 350C question

Got a guy down the road from me that has a new to him 350C Deere dozer. I looked at it the other day and had to give him the bad news that the left brake is worn out. It pushes great, steers slow when pushing(( so I know the steering clutches are OK)) but even with the brake tightened as tight as I could get it, it won't grab enough to do a tight turn.

I checked with Deere, and they wanted right at $1000 for a new brake. Does anyone know of a aftermarket source for a reman brake, or a source for lining? I can install new lining myself if it's riveted, and have a place that can do the bonded stuff, so that's not an issue. The main thing is getting it done for less than $1000.

Finally, has anyone has the brake out of one of these? Looking at the parts book it looks like the brake and clutch all come out the top, but someone told him that you have to brake the track and it all comes out the side, along with the final drive. I've done both before, but haven't been into a 350C yet so I'm just guessing on this one based on what I can see on the parts breakdown. Does anyone know for sure? Thanks.

Final drive has to come off with any 350 series. 450 is the one that allow access out the top without pulling a final.

When you say you tightened the band all the way -exactly WHAT did you tighten? The adjuster sizing wheel, the linkage, or both?

I couldn't find any excess play, or wear, in the linkage so I didn't mess with any of that. Basically with the hand lever in the unapplied position, and the lever going into the brake housing at rest, everything was tight.

What did was to pull the plug on the top of the steering clutch/brake housing and adjust the starwheel. Based on what I could tell it is adjusted as tight as it would go. Given that I could only get about 1/4 turn out of it, it was all but adjusted as far at it would go from the start. With it adjusted that extra little bit, there was still no resistance felt at the hand lever from the brake band tightening on the drum, and no difference in the way the machine steered. This tell me that the lining on the band is shot.

Forgot to say thanks. Looking at the parts book it was hard to tell exactly how they came out, so knowing this helps tremendously. Too, any idea on whether the linings are riveted or bonded?
