What is the difference-48 and 54 ??

Forum Members,
Considering buying HD4 tracks for an HD3 Allis. Question is, how are the 48 inch width and 54 inch track width different? Does the width come from the undercarriage frame width difference or something else not evident to the HD3 novice? Any and all thoughts are welcome. I have pictures of both sprockets and they look the same, neither flared. Hope this makes sense.

on my Cats the difference between narrow gage and wide gage machines is just in the length of the final drives and the distance out of the track frames---otherwise most all other parts are the same, except pads may be wider on wide gage.

The difference in WIDE and narrow gauge in those dozers is accomplished by the first piece off the dozer there at the final drive. one has a longer housing making it wider. Internal gears are the same except the pinion shaft is longer in the wide gauge tractor. You can have any width pad on either the narrow or wide gauge tractor. Pad width has nothing to do with it.

in general with the wider gage machine it will accommodate wider pads, from the track frame being further out from the body of the machine
