Ford 4500 tlb update and oil pump question

Hey folks.

I am in the process of rebuilding the motor in my 4500 tlb.

It is the 201 3 cylinder diesel and I have the block resleeved and disassembled the oil pump for cleaning and inspection.

All the clearances are within spec however the rotor housing is slightly scored, just enough to barely catch a fingernail in one spot.

Should I use or replace? I don't have an unlimited budget!

Also I have a tab broken off the bottom of the hard nose where it attaches to the motor and I would like to replace the nose if I can find one. Otherwise I am going to see if I can heat the casting and weld the tab back on.

Thanks for any help.

Brad

Search around a bit and see if you can find any info on "cold welding" with nickel rod. It's what the NYS Ag extension folks teach and it works, without all the preheating fuss.

In short, you lay a short bead of Ni rod and peen the thing as it cools, rather than try to heat up a whole huge casting. The peening moves the metal enough to deal with the shrinkage you'd otherwise need heat for. If the part starts to heat, you walk away from it and come back when it's cool again. You lay an inch at a time at most, and move it around the item you are fixing.

Despite owning two 4500's I cannot offer a useful opinion on your oil pump, as I haven't been into mine.

Aftermarket oil pumps are avaiable, if you trust them. I found one on this site.

Thanks for the information.

I may try the procedure you are talking about.

I was thinking about using a large torpedo heater
and see how hot I could gt the casting and then
welding it.

You would be better off to leave the pump as it is rather than attempt to build it up I never heard of such rubbish, taking chances with the oil pump is putting the rest of the engine at risk,a new pump will be cheaper than a crank or block,my advise to you is fit a new pump,at my place that is standard procedure when engines are rebuilt to replace the oil pump in small engines and rebuild them in large engines that parts are available for such as Cat and Komatsu etc,but its you who is doing the job.
Good luck
