I've got a 545 Ford with the 3 cyl diesel and a few years ago it developed a coolant leak into the crankcase so I purchased a short block for $2500 plus exchange. Found out later probably from this site that the small hp diesels create cavitation in block where the small air bubbles will eventuality penetrate the cyl wall and cause a leak into the crankcase. The rebuilt block came with only one insert and that was in no 1 cyl. Maybe AJ can enlighten why only one cyl fixed with inserts instead of all 3. So if you're going thru all the trouble of reboring you might consider an insert in the first cyl. Ask AJ for an opinion. Udo

Thanks Udo, I was aware of the cavitation
problem of those engines, just havent been
around many of them personally. At least the
one I'm working on wasnt getting coolant in
crankcase. Since its not my engine, Im just
going to take the block, head and crank to the
engine machine company near me and let them
make the decisions on it, along with the owner.
Then Ill assemble it when they're done with it. Ill
bet if yours was a short block and had just one
cylinder sleeved, it was probably just a cost
saving measure by the remanufacterer. If it was
mine, and I had 1 cavitated cyl, I would have all
3 done to be safe. Boring the block for those
sleeves isn't real expensive, and the sleeves are
only $40 each, thats cheap insurance in my
eyes. Ross
