I am getting ready to replace the hydraulic and transmission fluid in my 1970 model 5500 Ford backhoe. The book has a string of numbers for the type oil to be used in both. Both are different. I was wondering if any of you just use one type of hyraulic oil in both resevoirs? I just bought this backhoe and it has water in the hydraulic oil. So I am going to change it before I start using it. Has anyone ever figured out a CHEAP way to seperate the oil and water? Theres 55 gallons of the stuff in this machine. $$$$!!!!

Any good quality generic HyTrans oil will do just fine,at my place we buy bulk from Shell, Spirax S4 TXM is used in everything, hydraulics, shuttle/power-shift transmission and steering, some of the older hoes had 80/90w gear oil and would still need the same, there is a process for to remove water from the oil, that would only be available at the dealers and no way would be viable for a one off job, there are filters available that claim to remove the water from the oil if you keep changing them, have a look at where the water is entering the system and repair it,machines that live outside esp ones without cabs are most at risk from water entering around levers with cracked gaiters etc.

I have two barrels of oil here. 15W40, and hyd/trans fluid. I buy from a reputable distributor who only sells petroleum, and related products, labeled to meet multiple manufacturers spec's. I don't care what brand is on the label. These oils are used in my Ford 655A backhoe, dozer, farm tractors, combine, truck, lawnmower, etc. etc.

A good way to remove water from oil is to heat it. The water will boil away and you are left with only oil. I have done this, I only do it outside away from any buildings. I fill a steel barrel about 2/3 full and use a wood fire and heat it slowly, you want the water to boil, not the oil.
