aftermarket hydraulic seals vs. OEM

Anyone have first hand experience with aftermarket seal kits for
hydraulic cylinders compared to O.E.M. parts? I have to believe
that the aftermarket parts are coming from China. The parts that
I have purchased from Deere seem to be US made. For a seal
kit for a cylinder that I need to reseal, the Deere kit is about
$150, aftermarket runs 60-90$. I don't want to use inferior parts,
and of course don't want to waste money either. Any advice?

This is one of those areas where, like tires, there are only so many mfgs of hydraulic components, regardless of the name on the pack. That said, I know Deere has some of their O-rings made of a material not standard in some of the more common sizes. I just ran into this recently on an older tractor that belongs to a customer. My 90 durometer Buna-n O-rings wouldn't seal, while the factory one, that was still 90 durometer, but made of another material, did.

That said, what I usually tell my customers is that it's best to go ahead and spend the difference in cost to get the factory kits when they are available. I tell them this, if for no other reason, than the time it takes me to tear a cylinder down, and try to take the old parts and match them up, is more than offset by knowing you've got the right parts ((((((usually, but not always...BTDT too))))) right off the bat, and being able to get the machine down, repaired, and back in the game that much quicker.

Have you checked with Baum Hydraulics in Omaha to see if they have what you need, and where the parts are made?

They have a wide variety of aftermarket parts cataloged and cross-referenced and readily available.

I've had good service from them, but who knows where anyone's parts come from nowadays.

Lots of parts from the DEERE place nowadays have China stickers on them.

Just because you order from a JOHN DEERE dealer does not mean the dealer got your part from JD. The dealer here gets all his starters and alternators from Select Parts not through JD.
The dealer here has a hose machine in the back room. if you buy any hydraulic or fuel hoses they are made in the back room and they put the JD part number on it.

Sometimes the package will have "Made in the U.S.A." on it. However, that can only mean that the packaging was made in the U.S.; what is inside the package could have come from anywhere in the world.

I've also seen packaging that said "Made in America". Close examination showed that it was made in SOUTH America!
