They have portable cranes that can lift a million pounds, could one of these pull out a big tree like a weed ??

Think about it like this. If it has a line pull of a million pounds, then it can pick, or pull anything that weights a million pounds or less.

The biggest thing in the whole pick would be that the tree would have to come out smoothly. All it would take would for it to take 999,999 lbs to pull it out, and when it hit that last little bit, the tree jumped and created/sent a shock load back into the crane. A situation like that has a big potential to cause wires to snap, and/or the crane's boom to collapse.

Might be possible. Undoubtedly not efficient; cutting it down, removing the trunk on a log truck, and using a 50-foot class excavator on the stump would almost certainly take less time and bother; plus you save all the exciting things that happen when loads lurch that were already mentioned. If you need to yank something, pure hydraulics or mostly hydraulics and a short, heavy chain are much safer than messing with cables.

Something common these days is to use a big track hoe. Knock it over, chew the root ball down, then pick it up and set it aside. Kinda amazing to see.
