ok so i have this old prime mover skidsteer,
vintage 1982. previous owner was running hy-
tran hydraulic fluid in it. i am replacing one
of the drive motors new. trw-ross motor. main
pump is a sunstrand sauer. the owners manual
(finally found one) said to use 10w40 se/sf
rated motor oil. it is an old rating. guy at
the hydraulic shop recommended i run 10w40
motor oil mixed 50/50 with dextron 3
transmission fluid. he said the trans fluid
will add anti foaming and anti wear additives
to the oil. any thoughts???? the main pumps are
axial piston pumps.

If you read the motor can it should say anti foam on it some where. I would use just what the manual says . just make sure all letters/number are on the oil you buy. I don't think mixing any oils is a good thing. norm

You can get it at most motorcycle shops. It is for wet clutch setups. Anything new like a sj wouldbe okay too.

I do not recommend mixing oils. There are a few things to consider when selecting hydraulic oils, best described in the following attachment.

from the article, it looks like zinc is the most common anti wear. for the old se/sf spec, would rotella 15w40 be a better choice than the 10-40 automotive oil available now?

I prefer not to use multi-viscosity oils in the hydraulic system.
Hydraulic oil SAE 10W (equivalent to a ISO 32) is good for a temperature range of about -4 to 104 degrees F.

I like to follow Caterpillars recommendations and they do not support multi-viscosity oil in the hydraulic systems.
