580CK - to buy?

Hey guys -

I've located this 580CK in NE Iowa. Not shown in the link, but this machine is set-up with a 540 pto and the rock-shafts for a three point, but no lower arms or drawbar. The optional three point hitch and associated frame for this machine are seemingly hard to find (googling for hours), but the dealer's dad has a Case "eagle hitch/drawbar" off a Case 530 row-crop which he states will bolt right up for an additional $500. I'm interested in this machine because as I stated in an earlier post I like the idea of a seriously heavy duty loader, the capability of backhoe use occasionally/rarely, and the practicality of a three point for farm use (moving snow, haying, etc.). What do you folks think of this machine? Is it a bad idea to think of this as a utility tractor with the extra of a backhoe for the same price as a utility tractor? I'd like to use it to push snow but am worried about lack of traction if I take the hoe off - which i'd like to do so i could mount a rear blade...also, do these "eagle" hitches really accept typical cat 1 implements or what? sorry for all the questions but I have very little experience with heavy equipment. Thanks in advance for any advice you might be able to offer; i sincerely appreciate your guys' expertise!

Price seems steep to me .I think I would go over to the case site and ask .are you sure it is a 580 and not a 530?

Don't understand why you would buy a backhoe and then remove the hoe. It would be a pain in the a!! to put the three point on anyway. Not real easy to switch back and forth.

Eagle Hitch works fine with most standard 3 point attachments. I've got three tractors with Eagle hitches and have yet to find a standard Cat. 1 three-point attachment that would not fit.

I've got a 580CK with front loader and most of the rear hoe removed. Platform, controls and stabilizers still there but boom, dipperstick, and bucket removed. Absolutely useless for traction. Even with chains. It will spin even on wet dirt and is REAL bad in snow.

This is an old tractor site and I have to bite my toung ever now and then but that thing is just too old and not going to be practical to take the hoe off and on like you are thinking. I am sure it would be out of your budget but Kubota makes units that will do what you are wanting to do with ease. Google L35 Kubota.

In this area that's a great price. We've got a 480B that had the 3pt option. It didn't come with a backhoe but we use a 3pt IH backhoe with it now. These are beefy loaders. Much better than anything you buy now... MUCH BETTER.

I'd buy it.

Now I will say, you may want to keep the backhoe on there if you want to use the loader a lot. Even with loaded tires, traction can be iffy if you don't have enough weight on the back. I'm not sure about the 580CK, but the 480 has a bucket capacity of right at 3000lbs, so the backhoe is nice to keep traction if using the bucket.

(quoted from post at 18:16:14 10/15/14) FYI 1 of those sold at an auction 1 mile north of me, brought less than 3000.00.

With a backhoe? Here that's a rare price. The backhoe unit alone would bring nearly that here.

As several people have mentioned, traction can be a problem.

If using the loader with the backhoe removed, you either need a heavy implement on the 3 point, or a counterweight on the 3-point or backhoe mount. Ford (yes, I know it's a Case, but the idea can translate) certainly had a counterweight box listed in the parts catalog (I've never seen one in person, but I have limited exposure to tractors other than my own) for that purpose on their industrial loader tractors. Easy enough to fabricate if needed. Loading the rear tires and/or adding cast wheel weights can help, but is not as effective as the hoe since it's AT the wheels rather than beyond them - but if you are trying to put a blade on, that (or some scheme with extra weight on the blade) may be your only option.

Also the ad says "ROPS - open" when the reality shown in the pictures appears to be "ROPS - none". That, as they say in the trade, can kill you if you are not VERY careful ALL the time.

I had better not mention my '66 580CK for under $2K off Craigslist in Texas. But mine has a diesel engine so that makes it worth less??

You got a remarkable deal. The engine alone was worth that.

A few years ago I bought a 480C with a loader and 2600 hours for $3800. It was a municipal machine and looked like new and I still think I might have paid too much. Also, it had a 188 diesel engine and mechanical shuttle. Picked up a backhoe attachment and bucket for $1000. It was not too much work to put it on. But, I would want to do it on a regular basis.
I think they quit making 580s around 1970. Parts are mostly NLA. But, there are quite a few used parts around.
The old saying paint is worth its weight in gold might really be true. I would forget the 3 point hitch idea. If you still want the machine, seriously consider a lower offer

I am thinking that LTB is a 530 because it appears to have 2 seats. I have never seen a 580 CK with 2 seats. Also the boom and dipper stick on a 580 is a bit different because of the transport lock which the 530 does not.
