went and looked at 951c with bad engine

i like the looks of it, looks a whole lot better than what i have been looking at. the guy that has it now bought it from original owner which was a electric company that only used it to clean up spilled coal from train cars, and supposedly kept it well maintained, and supposed to be original hours(2768). the track pins measured 27 3/4 5 pin measurment. the paint isnt even scrathed up bad and no dents anywhere and no leaks anywhere. this guy said before he bought it just ran it long enough to test drivetrain and steering and shut it off. how much trouble is it to pull the engine? pretty sure i can do all the work myself other than turning the crankshaft. also what about engine kits? is aftermarket anygood? i have seen them for $1300 for out of frame kits. 6,000 for the dozer and i think i could get it going for another 2-3000 if no major problems. what do yall think?

As good as it looks question would be

How the hell do you wreck a Cat engine in those hours?

And what about other running gear then?

it has got water in the oil and in knocking.
the owner said he ran it just long enough to test everything
and said every thing worked good.
there did not seam to be any oil in the rad.

I know it is not a big deal now (to you) but not have a 4 & 1 bucket is just a deal killer on track loaders. One like that up running will not bring a penny over $8,500 and maybe less at auction. Without 4/1 bucket they do not sell.
What do you intend to do with the machine? You are right in that you should be able to get it running for 3 thousand or less.
