on my 690 B excavator the brake unit between the travel motor
and final drive leaks hydraulic fluid out the top vent whenever it
travels. Is there a piston or actuator in the brake unit that can be
rebuilt or resealed? how hard of a job may it be to reseal the
brake piston?

Yes there are seals inside there.. Once resealed, be sure to fill the cavity so there is oil on the brake disks.. Otherwise the disks will wear out pre-maturely..

Take a look at the link below. If it does right, it should pull of a link to the JD parts site showing a breakdown of the brake assembly on your machine. Between that pic, and the rest of the pics of the planetaries, it should let you see what parts are needed, and get them ordered before you even tear into it. Good luck.

Thanks NC Wayne and Roy. I found the section of the shop manual which covers the rebuild. It takes a shop press to compress the brake plate pack to remove a snap ring and disassemble the unit. It does say that the brake plates have to be soaked in hydraulic oil for one hour before reassembly. Should not be too bad of a job. Thanks again for the advice.
