jelled hydraulic oil

Looking at a Bobcat skid steer on auction site that doesn"t move from jelled hydraulic fluid, they think it was vandalized. How could someone make the fluid jell or some other reason it might jell?

Years ago someone in the shop put Massey Ferguson Hyd oil in a 4500 Ford hyd tank. . It formed a hard plastic like you get when you put gas in a styrofoam coffee cup .We ended up replacing the hyd tank on the Ford .....

If someone does know what caused the oil to gel keep it to yourself, post what and some yob will see it and no doubt be out that night vandalizing whatever machines are near him.

It has never happened to me, but the topic is interesting. Googled it and one post about oil jelling if ph is above 11.
Not sure if this is always true.

Alge can grow in hydraulic systems like it does in fuel. It can cause quite a mess but wouldn't cause the oil to gel in a literal sense.
