Got a lead on a 955 Cat loader. The owner died recently, his brother is selling it for his SIL but knows little about the machine
Apparently the steering clutches need fixing as the clutches have been removed and taken apart by the guy just before he passed away.
Guy wants 2 grand for it.
What kind of money ball park am i looking at for parts?
And what else should i be aware off,...I know next to nuttin about these loaders

Thanks

The 955 is a pretty good machine. One thing to look at, beyond the clutches, is to make sure the undercarriage is in good shape.

That said, based on what I just had priced out to do both clutches on a D6D, and what Stickweld has posted about the ones on his 931, I'd guestimate your looking at around $1500 to $2000, give or take, for the most common parts needed to rebuild them. Now if you get into needing the brake drums, or the inner hub, then you can probably add another $1000 to $1500, or more to the cost.

Now if you plan to do the work yourself then the parts will be all you need. If you need someone to do it for you, expect about 3 or 4 days labor to get all the components speced out, and rebuilt if needed, and then to get it all back together and running. Depending on labor cost in your area, I'd give that another $1500 to $2000.

In the end it's almost not worth buying, expecially when you can spend about the same money, or just a little more, for one that doesn't need any work, and is in running condition. On the other hand if you know the engine runs, and the transmission is OK, then your better off to buy cheap, and put in parts you know are good. In the end though that's just a matter or personal preference.

Hope that helps, and good luck.

Is this a bare 955 or does it have a letter after the number,it could have C,E,F,H.K and L,from the H on the brake bands were one piece and that meant that both steering clutches had to to come out to replace the brake bands, look on the back of the left steering clutch housing for the serial number tag,if the tag is missing the number is stamped into the casing, copy the number and post it,

It would help to know which model 955. Generally a
very good machine but buying one that is in pieces
could be a real nightmare.

Thanks for the info guys.
I have to go look at it yet. probably on monday.
I'll post back when i know more.

Went to look, was a 1960 955H. all but wore out.Looked like it had not seen a grease gun in 30 years,...scrap iron only

The 955H was the Rolls Royce of loaders back in it's day,1960 model would have a dry back end, pity to see it go for scrap, must have been going all right when he was bothering to repair the steering clutches,if it was within my reach I would have it but alas I am the other side of the pond.

elieve me, you would walk away from to if you saw how worn out and abused the thing was.
I rebuild a D7 cat for a neighbor 10-12 years ago,..it was in about the same shape as that 955. I told him it wasn't worth it but he insisted i overhaul it. What a nightmare it was, the whole bloody drive train front to back was worn till the hilt
4 months and 35+ grand later he had a running cat that still needed new tracks sprockets and rollers, another 20+ thou
Cat was still worth maybe 15 thou after i was done with it.
2 days later he was back with it, hydr pump piled on on him, and drained the hydr oil into the engine.
Another 3 grand down the drain.
I told him not to ever come back with the POS cause i wasn't gonna fix it no more.
