T340 Tracks

Hello all...new to this so bare with me...

I have a (guy bought it from) 1971 T340 International Dozer

It's got worn out tracks.

The guy said might be able to use some JD links...

Well the serial is 340-2668

I have the specs on the tracks and links from the manual and basically it's a 6" Pitch on the links.

I am finding it difficult to find specs on other tracks/links out there to figure out a model/year that might be able to cross with other mfgs.

Figured if I could find other mfgs model/year specs it would be easier to search things out.

Any help would be greatly appreciated with pointing me a direction for specs.

Thanks,

Mike in MN

The links I had to his websites don't work any more, but he has posted on here recently as "CHinNY" I think.

Doing some furthur looking I found one at the "old cat site" but our "potty filter" prevents me from posting the link.

Try the T340 discussion group. It"s not very active, but a number of owners subscribe and will see postings. Also, if you send me an email I can give you contact info on a friend who used to have a parts machine with good tracks. I don"t think you"ll find a substitute. Bottom parts are a real problem to find for this machine, but they do occasionally appear. The NY guy is also a good source.

Mike, try www.redpowermagazine.com, use the construction forum. They specialize in IH and may be able to help. Good JD site at jdcrawlers.com, Lavoy may know of any interchange. Off the top of my head, I don't recall an interchange, which is why a lot of the 340s are no longer useable. I have (had) a compilation of track specs that I put together over quite a few years, but unfortunately it may have got eaten by a dead computer at some time. Good luck, you have a nice little machine.

Deere is 5.75, won't work. I do not know of another manufacturers tracks that will work, at least not that I have ever heard of, and we have 2 T340's in the shed.

Is it the tracks only you want, are the sprockets good enough, the Case 450A,B.and C has a 6" pitch, the bushing diameter is slightly bigger at 46.8mm compared to the T340 at 42.5mm but as your sprockets are not new that would work fine, the pads are another issue,if you are hoping to use your own the bolt size differs,7/16 for the IH and 1/2 for the Case,I don't know about the pattern, there are lots of machines around that undercarriage is no longer available for and they have to be adapted to what is available, check out the Chinese importers.

Thanks guys...

It didn't notice there were comments here...I will followup with all that was referred to.

Another side note...

I do have a machine shop here (CNC production shop).

I was almost thinking...here we go right... :D :D :D

That I could just make the links over the winter time here when the guys go home in evenings (I own the shop).

The problem is...my links are sooo worn out that getting good dimensions from them would not be possible.

Any insight to geometry of these old machines out there?

The books has many of the pitch...bushing and pin sizes...but the actual link geometry isn't there.

It wouldn't take me long to program a right and left link and then just pound a 136 links out on my CNC machine.

Any direction there?

Thank you,

Mike in MN

Yea go to red power as was suggested. I'll bet someone there will be able to give you the specs. Very helpful bunch over there.

Where at in MN? I'm north of Alexandria?

Rick

I am up in Gilbert...by Virginia...north of Duluth about an Hour.

Thanks...I will check that redpower out.

Thank you,

My FIL worked at the Virginia power plant after he retired from the Navy.

Been up there a few times while I was on leave.

I have at least 6 sets of chains and 2 sets of New Pins and Bushings I know one set measures at 90%. If i don't get sick or die this winter I'm going to go through all these chains put the New P&B in the best chains and the best down the line so if someone needs some maybe by spring or before i will start having them ready. I case people don't know I own Crawler Heaven and have had stage 4 cancer and been on chemo over 5 years and had to semi retire Have not done much in the last two years but still have a lot of parts and machines i just can't do things in a hurry If i die my wife will be selling stuff off for awhile then she will scrap the rest

CHinNY....thanks for the reply and sorry to hear your struggles.

Questions for you...

Would you happen to have a single decent link loose?

I would buy it or pay to ship it to me and measure it up and send it back if possible.

If I can get some dimensions...I would draw it up in my CAD Software and do a 3D construction of the tracks.

My thoughts thus far...(anyone correct me if I am wrong)..

I am thinking I can make the bushings and pins with off the shelf round/tubing sizes (1.5" Tubing for bushings with 1" stock round for the pins).

The ID on the tubing is 1." which runs small all the time..but easy enough to run a reamer thru to open them up for clearance of the stock pins.

If I were to make the links...I could easily make the link bores to the size of the stock material...I am thinking this would be the easiest way to only really have to just machine one part of the chains...just the links.

I have a couple different shop and service manuals coming with a parts book for this machine..hopefully over the course of researching here I will get more educated.

Again..any feedback is appreciated...even if it's "Your kind of a retard thinking like this"...

So I was out playing on the dozer today and figured I would take a couple measurements and start mocking up some models and drawings.

http://www.cncbasics.com/AssembleTrackLinksT340.pdf

This is as close as I can get to "real" measurements without finding out some more literature on the tracks.

Right now the clearance for "rotation" of the link is just under 65 degrees..so I believe that is plenty.

The only real thing I need to find out is the link to link width. On my rollers and idlers...there is plenty of room..but not sure on original equipment.

Anyone have any feedback on the linked pdf please let me know.

I happen to have two brand new links in the shop. I bought a new chain for mine in the 90"s. it was for a t340a and was a link longer than mine. send me an email if you still want one.
