Dozer vs skid steer

Was at an auction looking at a case 450 crawler someone ask the owner why he was selling it , he said his gehl skid steer with tracks would push over a bigger tree than the crawler . Is just bs or does the gehl have that kind of power??

B,
It all depends on the size of the skid steer! The tracked version skid steers are quite nice compared to the wheeled version. Wonder if there are any glitches with the 450?

Interesting question, suspect his observation is highly subjective, however a quick look shows the following: Gehl site shows "biggest" tracked skid (RT250) at 55hp, ~11,595#, 10 ft. lift. Ritchie specs show 450 at 88 hp, ~12,000#. If these numbers are representative of his equipment, the skid's only advantage that I can think of would be that it's easier digging around the tree stump and it's reach of 10 ft. allowing him to push high on the tree, then get under it and "lift the base". An old operator friend used a Cat 963 to "pop" trees out in a like manner. Have seen very few loaders used for tree pushing though, mainly dozers, now excavators. Be great to see what the others say.

idk what kind of tree pushing this guy was doing but I've logged a lot of hours on case dozers especially 450's and 550's and after borrowing a buddy's track gehl (big) I would agree with this guy. the push power is impressive plus for an all around machine you could do so much more with the skid steer especially with a grapple

We needed to clear a cherry tree from the edge of a field I had it loose (case 310G crawler loader) and would have had it in another 10 minutes of work, Another guy who I was working with moved in, he had a newer(big) JD skid steer, he couldn't get it so cut it off left the stump. Yes it was a tracked machine

I'd say it's possible... The 450 dozer is not much heavier and has no more power than a lot of large tracked skids so I don't see why the skid couldn't push just as much...

All depends on what you"re willing to pay.
I play with smaller loaders and dozers, 12K lbs and under, and most people who show up always ask what the advantages are of a skid loader and dozer..
I normally respond, if you want to spend twice to three times as much for doing the same thing, then buy a skid loader.

I have both an old D4 and a tracked ASV 70. Pushing out Cedar trees the skid steer can do it easier and faster, but like was said before, I have to use the rock bucket, and get up about 6 or 7 feet. I have tipped some big trees out that way. With the dozer I have to do a bit more work, but have only found 1 Cottonwood that I haven;t gotten down.

Big advantage with the compact track-loader is versatility and ability to change attachments quickly. The last 1800 hours or so I've put on my Bobcat T-250 (80 hp) have been either with the root rake/grapple, tree saw or toothed bucket. I've owned a JD 401C and a Cat 416 but not a dozer so can't give a comparison between the dozer/CTL question other than the CTL works for me in multiple roles very nicely and I can haul it on my 14,000# gooseneck easily.

The 450 will embarrass the skid steer at pushing trees if it is a loader. Saw an hd5 allis with a blade on it once. My kubota with a rear blade will do more......
