Case 580B brakes

On our 580B backhoe, sometimes it will stop great when the clutch is applied and other times it seems hard to push and doesn't want to stop. It just started this a week ago after I blew a hydraulic line on the hoe part. Just wondering if the blown hose has anything to do with the brake problem or what the problem is. Any help is appreciated. Keith

Three different 580B's,one with mechanical shuttle, one with the power shuttle and one hydrostatic drive, they all should stop when the clutch is depressed, the mechanical drive machine the clutch is disengaged,if the pedal is stiff the linkage could be sticking at some point or the release bearing is binding on its tube, the other two machines when the pedal is depressed it opens a valve and dumps the oil, check the linkage, see that none of the bell cranks are going over center or the linkage sticking or something fell down from above, the hydraulics for the hoe and loader are not connected to the power train, the power train has its own oil and pump, check its oil level.

Thanks for the reply. This one is a power shuttle. I adjusted the brakes up a little but it really doesn't seem like it did any good. I'll check the fluid when I get home this evening. Keith

OK,when you press the clutch cut out pedal the drive is disconnected but the machine may coast on till you press the brake, the 580B or any other Case of that era never had what one would term "good brakes" especially if any oil gets on the discs which was a common problem with them,as the linkage to operate the brakes are mechanical, there are some joints that have grease nipples that may need greasing,I thought it was the clutch pedal you had trouble depressing, look at that for grease nipples too.
