Removing brakes HD 6

Want to know others experience removing brake retaining pins through holes in frame.I have been unable to get the pins to line up with the holes. Directions I have say to thread a bolt into drilled tapped holes in end of pins, do not know the size but think it is a 5/16 nc. Have totally released the adjustment bolt. Still unable to get the pins to line up with holes in frame. Would like to know if it is necessary to loosen the brake anchor block.

After removing the support bolt under housing you should be able to play with the brake band to get inlingne the pine with the hole and you do need loosen the anchor block

Gemdozer,

Thanks again for sharing your expertise on HD 6 crawlers. Looks like access to the holes in the frame would be better if the left hand fender were removed. What is your opinion regarding removing the fender?

A good view of the left hand side of our HD6 is available on our website:

I was able to get new brakes from General Gear in Idaho. Also bought a new yoke for the top brake band. One on mine is good but I didn't know it was okey until I removed the brake cover.
Thanks again,

Chris

Gemdozer,

I was able to take a picture of our HD6 off our website.
Thanks ,
Chris

Left fender and battery box shown in picture. I think access to the holes in the frame to remove the brake pins would be better if the left hand fender battery box were removed.
What do you think?

Gemdozer,
I was able to take a picture of our HD 6 off our website. Left side view with fender and battery box. I think removing the fender plus the fuel tank would make better access to the holes in the frame in order to remove brake pins. What do you think?
Thanks,
Chris

Gemdozer,

Thank you for the information about the fender. A lot less work to leave the fender in place. I will loosen the block which retains the brakes.

You do't need to loosen the block you just play whit the band and pine band should be easy to pull out and should be more easy to enline the second pine

Gemdozer,

That is great news to me. I was thinking it could be difficult to hold the block bolts on the inside of the housing if the nuts were loosened on the ouside of the housing. One thing I realized is that I forgot to remove the bottom housing bolt on the clutch housing which sets clearance for the bottom of the brake band to the drum
I don't know if you are familiar with Orcas Island in the San Juans. My HD 6 is located on a piece of property we have which is 15 miles from where I have my small shop and tools. I prefer to avoid what I call field repairs and like to have eq. at my small shop where I keep my tools. I was thinking about having it hauled to my shop. Very expensive here as the only person who does this type of work has a very large multi axle tilt trailer and a 10 wheel truck for pulling power. He hauls a lot of very large excavators. Much bigger equipment that needed to haul my HD 6 but only choice I have. Your experience is greatly appreciated. What part of the country are you located.

Gemdozer,
Thanks for the information. Good news to me as I was thinking it might be difficult to hold the bolts on the block if the nuts were loosened on the outside.
I forgot to remove the bottom bolt which adjusts clearance for the brake band to the drum.
I have my place on Orcas island in the San Juan islands. What part of the country do you live?

I am located STE-JULIE near MONTREAL CANADA and yes with the bolt support removed you should be able to play with band brake for inligne the hole and some time the pines are worn and have a grove on

You might find someone in WA or nearby to help you as well if you also post on the two Allis Chalmers sites

DonBC ,
I'll be going back to Seattle on the weekend. County Line Equipment is a very good source for parts and information.Plan to drive to their location.
Thanks for the information.
Chris
