Are 450 john deere crawlers any good

I have seen some 450 john deere crawlers and dozers for sale. some are 450b. Just wondered what experience you have had on these such as parts, how do they hold up, weak points. Any info is appreciated. Thanks Norm

Very rugged in their time. Weak spots? The HL-R powershift transmission/reverser is not weak - but . . When worn it's very expensive to fix and often will work fine cold - but stop moving when good and hot. So easy to hide the problem and sell at auction. Same for the engine and the twin balancing shafts at the bottom. Often overlooked during an in-frame engine rebuild. When worn the engine has good oil pressure but when and hot, near zero. Another sort of thing easily hidden when sold at auction.

Some weak points are ; Engine main frame rails break by the clutch housing area , and back where they attach to the steering clutch housings.. Like John said, The HLR transmission.. Most are so out of adjustment , that they just won't even operate like they should.. People just run them till they won't run anymore.. That HLR should be able to shift in 2nd gear, from high to reverse and vice versa without using the clutch pedal at full engine speed.... A HLR transmission that shifts badly will make excessive heat and will drastically shorten the life of that trans..
