international 500E good investment?

I'm looking to purchase an international 500E. I sent the guy a small deposit so if I don't buy it I'm out peanuts. Anyways I have seen and drove the machine. It has brand new steering clutches in it but the right side is not releasing. The guy that rebuilt them said it just needs adjusted I don't know though. The machine sat for a very long time in a barn. The hour meter is showing 1927. Everything else seems to work on it. I can have the machine for 8500. Is this a good purchase or should I look for something like a Deere 450. I'm concerned about parts availability. I'm planning on using it to do some projects I have around my land.

I know this is an old tractor site but I have over 40 years IH experience including my father owning a dealership when the 500s were new. For my part that unit is priced twice what it is worth. You could find a td7e with power shift and newer where you could get parts for about the same or less than 10 grand. The 500s were notorious for steering clutch issues. The 7s and 8s have wet steering totally different and give better service. Saw a pretty nice jd450 sell last Satuarday at auction $ 6750.00

That's great info. I only sent him a 100 deposit so I will be out that which does not bother me. Doing a search online I'm finding very little available for them and for what I do find it seems to be limited or expensive or used with condition unknown.I'm thinking a smaller cat or Deere would be a better option. I really want something small with at least a 4 way blade. After talking with some other people I think I may just pass and continue my venture.

Generally considered one of the poorest built
crawlers. Most i have seen were parked or needing
work. That is way too much $$$.

Well, I guess I will scratch this idea then.

Would a 350 be a good machine to look at? I want something I can transport with my pickup and a gooseneck without over width permits.

How are the parts availability for the dresser machines?

How about Case??

This really isn't my forte so I apologize for all the questions. I just was a solid machine with a strong parts network and a kind of trouble free machine....meaning something that's not prone to problems like the steering clutches on the international.

What part of the country are you located? Know where they are several dozers under 10,000 around that are good latter model units with 6 way blades

Clarksville Tenn Craig,s list just had a ih/dresser td7 E 6 way blade priced right. Lots of little crawlers out there. You would be a lot better off spending just a little more and getting something a lot newer. A 40 year old dozer is a money pit most times. I have sold used equipment for 40 years. Here is what happens. Guy finds a painted up 40 year old unit pays premimum say 6500 then gets it home, something small like starter goes 75 bucks, then say radiator leaks 200 next week spends 150 on something else then he has a final drive or engine go down . Now he is faced with spending another $2500 so he will have 9 grand in a old dozer or he has to take 3 thousand for his junker and get out. Not saying you can,t get luck and find a good cheap unit but be carefull.

My original thought was under 5k then I started seeing just what your saying. So I started looking at machines around the 10k mark. Seemed to have made a difference in year and model availability. The td7 is a dresser correct? Solid machine? I see them up into the late 80s.

Just found you a deal Go to Nashville Tn CL, heavy equipment , Case 450 for 8800. I know the kid that has it and it is a good running dozer and new enough you can get parts. Good luck.

I called about that case. Seems the undercarriage is about 20% 8800 seems a little steep if it needs undercarriage work, anyone agree?? He also thinks its a late 70s early 80s machine.
