580 CK backhoe

I've got a 580 CK that I can't keep the rod packing from leaking on the hoe boom cylinder. It rarely gets chained up and I think the stress on that seal is causing it to leak too soon after a rebuild. The rod looks good and nothing is nicked or worn. Used to have a 530 CK and I think it had a better hoe design. Guess I'm just looking for a better way to hold the boom up when not being used and if there is a better style rod packing that will live longer.

I have rebuilt lots of 580CK and up cylinders, as long as the Rod is not damaged or bent and the gland is in good shape 2000 hrs or more on a rebuild is the norm that I see, I assume you are installing them correctly and lubing each part before you install and again as you assemble? I have found that any water in the hyd system will take out the seals very quickly, I also recommend using only cnh Hy-Tran as it conditions seals and adds life

There is no damage on any part of the cylinder that I can find. It's the only cylinder that I have any problems with. This thing has less than 3000 hours on it but it's a gasser so it's not worth much. Worth more to me so I don't have to pay somebody to do the work. It's always inside but I guess condensation could still get in the oil. Thanks for the help.

I'll add that every time I dig out the old gland packing it breaks apart easily but the pieces are still pliable. There isn't much to rebuilding just a gland packing, backer ring, two snap in wipers, and an o ring with a spiral backer ring. I don't replace the piston rings every time.

Memory is fading and I see so many different machines,I seem to remember that the older style cylinder gland had a bushing to carry the rod,if the bushing wears the seal does not last, some glands did not have a bushing the gland was honed to a fine finish,if the bore got scored the seal would fail, later glands had fiber bushings that came split,if they are worn the seal will fail, the other thing that can cause the seal to fail is it is not a snug fit in its groove,I have often used made up plastic spacers on the outside of the pressure seal to take up any play in the groove,if the seal can move a couple of thou with the rod it will leak in no time.
Good luck

This gland doesn't have a bushing in it. The rod packing isn't
lose in the groove, just enough gap for the fiber back up ring to
fit. I'm going to mic everything to see if there is any wear.
