931B steering etc.

I found the dis-assembly procedure on line and am going to take my steering valves out to have new rollers installed and the valves rebuilt. Any idea on a ball park cost for this? Is it good to do both at the same time? I only have a steering problem on one side(left side doesn't do anything) but I know the roller is worn on the side that works. From what I've been reading this is a common problem when you lose steering. Is there anything else I should check first? I had it steering really good, then one day the left side just stopped doing anything even if you stood on the pedal. Bob/Ont said the roller wearing out is the most common problem when you lose steering.

Another less important problem is the seat. The wood deteriorated and the seat has no way to be held on. Chunks pulled out where the bolts go. I was thinking of just using some epoxy to glue the wood to the seat frame? The seat was recovered at some point but I don't really want to take it apart and make a new base. Maybe some fiberglass resin would preserve the wood so it doesn't get worse?

You would likely get them from the dealer at a reasonable price. Take them apart first and see what all you need. The spool might be worn at the seal area and check the internal springs are not broken. Have them print you a pic of the valve for asembeming.

Thanks Bob! I have the disassembly and assembly procedure that was part of what I downloaded. I don't have a problem just taking them in as I don't have a shop to work in. I just don't want sticker shock like I got when I had to have my stick cylinder repaired.($1300) I'll take them out and have a look though. A few hundred bucks would be OK to have steering again. I usually go to an independent repair shop instead of Finning. They used to be the Cat dealer back in the 50's. Do you think Finning might be a better place to take them?

If you have had a good experience dealing with them in the past use them now. It's not a difficult job.

I got them out! Only the one roller has a big flat spot but I'm wondering if the other one is just worn down all around it? They're covered in caked on dirt so I'll clean them up and have a better look. I think the shop labor rate is about $125/hr. A couple hours I could live with. I just don't want to be surprised by a $1000 bill! This is the shop that did my engine and covered it on warranty. I've got parts from Finning before but they don't even have a service counter.
