We got a 450 case dozer from an auction a few weeks ago and i got on it and did some things and noticed it sometimes just went randomly out of gear and had to wait a little for it to go back into gear. After a while of messing around on it and tightening the tracks and greasing up stuff i figured out its only going up an incline that it goes out. But itll make it up the incline backwards? I filled up the hydrolics fluid cause i thought it was the problem at first but nothing. Anyone have suggestion?

Have you checked the hydraulic fluid level in the dipstick under the seat? Sounds like you are running a lil low.

This is what it looks like under the seat

If your not in the mood to check the fluid level under your seat you can check the mesh screen on the intake side of your charging pump. Although I"m quite sure the level under your seat is insufficient. Good luck chum!

What one is the dip stick? Wheres the charge pump? This is my first dozer sorry if i sound dumb.. Where do i fill it also if its low?

The dipstick is under the seat. Lift off the seat and you will see I think two "tubes" sticking straight up. Pull on the top of the bigger one. It doesn't look like a car dipstick or anything. Check the level, it's low. Fill it through that same dipstick opening.

The charge pump is on the right hand side of the engine under the alternator.

Save yourself the headache and check the dipstick under the seat, if the fluid on the stick is foamy or creamy change the fluid. Top it up otherwise and run it again. It should run fine.

I've worked on an 850, but not a 450 so I can't tell you much about yours beyond this. Reverse and forward use different parts in the transmission, so it it possible that the reverse side of things works while the forward side doesn't.

That said, click on the link below to Case's web site. I can't say I care for their equipment given some of the things I've seen while working on the ones I've worked on, but they do have an excellent web site if you need parts. The good thing about the parts books are that they let you search for things like the charge pump, suction screens etc, and see exactly where on the machine the pieces are. With this info it's then easier to take it apart, or do whatever needs to be done to make the repair.
