hi guys. today I went and picked up a JD 420 crawler with a friend. I am looking for some simple info for now.

1. Where would I find the S/N so we can properly ID?

We tried to get it running, guy said it was last running three years ago. no spark. so we winched it on the trailer. one blown trailer tire and brake line later its home.

2. how much does one of these things weigh with a loader bucket?

3. what do I need to know besides the S/N to properly ID this?

Will get some pictures tomorrow, traded it for a yamaha 225 three wheeler, hope we didnt get took! will be looking for ignition parts to start, then see where we go from there. Thanks

Some numbers that I had noted for the Case 420 ignition with a Delco distributor,Contact set (points) Case # F10714 = Napa ECH CS 63A,Condenser Case 1869704 = Napa ECH PR 174,spark plugs Champion D16, 18mm thread, those are old numbers so take the old bits with you to compare, you can look up the on-line parts catalog at the link below.
Good luck

serial number is behind carb on bell housing. Motors
are easy to work on. Point plugs and wires she
should be good to go. Make sure no stuck valves or
anything. If you post a pic ID of it should be fine
if no tag..

440 crawler with a 831 loader and rear scarifier and
factory counterweights weighs 11,026 lbs. 420 with
a 90 loader weighs around 9800 lbs if no attachments
on the back.

They came with either 4 or 5-speed Trannys. My 5-speed has a slotted "cap" for the shifter lever; my 4-speed doesn't have one. If the hood is original and has a yellow stripe on the side it is a later model, still 420.

after taking my pictures and figuring out how to get them on here, re-size them and figuring out how to post them, the site said I was too new to post pics!!! So maybe some day you guys might be able to see the thing. or some admin can come to the UP of MI and take pictures of it and post them for me..... :?

I am a member of many forums, I do appreciate all the comments and help from everyone, sorry I am a bit frustrated after the past hour and a quarter of messing with these pictures.
