Backhoe Trailer Tires Wear Uneven

Have a pintle trailer with tandem dual setup. Inside tires on front axle wear out inside of tire--like to the cord with the other side of tire still very good. A can't see anything out of line or bent. These are cheap Goodyear Workhorse bias tires. Anyone have this problem?

I see that a lot on the smaller, tandem axel trailers, some of my customers use. Based on what I can see what causes it is carrying more load on the front axel than the rear. This causes the front axel to flex down in the middle, when loaded, thus causing the front set of tires to be riding with the weight more on the inside of the tire rather than across the width of the tread. No more than it takes to cause it to happen, it probably won"t be anything visible to the eye, but the rubber tread on the tire sure knows what"s happening to it.

Too I"ve seen all sorts of "abnormal" wear to the tires on tandem trailers caused by the sliding effect that happens to the tires when turning. Many of the trailers I see are used to haul small equipment, skid steers, mowers, etc, and get used in neighborhoods a lot where they are constantly turning around at dead ends, etc. In cases like that the life of a tire is next to nothing as compared to one that lived it"s life just running around town making turns at intersections.

I have a tandem dually trailer that was a package deal when I bought my Cat. The mounting tab for the axle extended past the frame rail and when the Cat was on the trailer, there was very little clearance for the tire. I took a cutting torch and cut the mount even with the frame leaving just enough so the weld was still intact. Seemed really stupid to me to have the frame rails so wide. If they were about 1 1/2" narrower wouldn't have made any difference.

Thanks for the replies. I'm switching from 16.5 bias to 16 radials and maybe I'll get more service from my tires. LB

I just switched from radials to bias.
I don't think changing tires is going to fix your problem.
