I have an older D7, (SN about 3T2500 or so, 1972?) and I wanted to replace the Fuel Filter. The Parts book I have lists 7B8259 1-Element Assem. but then says "consists of 6 elements". There is no arrow pointing to the upper filter-looking thing? See the attached image from my manual. So, do I pull out the upper screen looking things (with no part number) and just replace the part 7B8259? When I look up that part, it's one filter, not 6? Do I just clean out the upper ones and replace the lower one? Thanks for your thoughts and advice.

There are 4 round fabric covered elements in the fuel filter box on the right side of the engine. you have to take the plug out on the bottom and drain the reservoir, you might have to also shut the fuel off in the back of the tank where the outlet is. take the cover off and remove the filters, they are attached to a Bakelite plate so be careful to not break the bakelite. the filters are around 8 inches in length, and about 2 inches in diameter. they have a hole down the middle for mounting. You can get them at a good auto parts store. The last ones I bought were not all the same length, so I had a hard time putting them in.I decided that when I do eventually buy more I will try to get them directly from CAT. the number in the parts book lists for 6, that is the correct filter, I think. Caterpiller usually has the parts for the older machines. There is the Antique Caterpiller Machinery Owners Club, ACMOC.org. You might get more info from their website.
I don't have the part # handy for the filters that I have , but I could post it later today. Like I said they were of varying lengths, so I don';t think they are a very good supplier. They are not cheap.

The spare filters ("element" per the parts catalog part# 7B8259) I have on the shelf look just like spools of string, those are what you change out.

If that serial number is correct, I would venture a guess that its a 1944 model, an early 3T, this series was built from 1944-1955, with 28,058 tractors built.

What parts catalog are you working from ?

Do you have a serviceman's reference book ?

The serviceman's reference book describes how to change the filters out and instructs to prime the fuel system once done, which is shown in another section of the same book. You'll have to open the vents, and crank the engine at low rpm with the compression on start and the throttle lever all the way forward, air will purge through the vent until fuel comes out.

The S.R.B. shows 4 filters mounted onto a plate, removed at one time, I don't recall where the other 2 filters called for go, I've actually never changed these though, and have wondered that myself. The parts catalog I am looking at is an O.E.M. Caterpillar 3T1 & UP, reprint 1952. There are 2 O.E.M. Parts Catalogs for this series with a serial number break at 3T 19999, then 3T 19999-28058 if I recall correctly, separate books.

I used Baldwin F919-C filters the last time, I had bought 8 of them, when I went to use them, I discovered that they were not all the same length, I was lucky to find 4 that were short enough to fit the machine, I now have 4 that I won't be able to use. I checked with CAT, the number that you have crosses to 2A5886 which is a 6 pack of filters and a gasket set. My book says 6 filters too, but I have never found where any more than 4 go. Cat dealer says they have them in stock, I don't have an account with them. The price they quoted was around $97.00. Kind of steep I guess , but I paid around $60.00 for 8 , but could only use 4. Good luck.

Early 3T's to s/n 22174 used 6 filters, the two rear filters are stacked. At s/n 22175-up they used four elements. Individual elements are a Baldwin F919-C or a Wix 33825.

That clears it up, the older books I have show it, and I'll bet the filter housings on mine match, given the earlier serial numbers. Always wondered that, as the photos in the books show 4 but the parts catalog calls for 6.
