955 K coupler between engine and transmission

Hi all, I have 955 k serial 85J',,,,, last year I had the joints between engine and trans go. I found the part ( four rubber pucks)and replaced them how ever after about 20 minutes of idling I felt a vibration. When I crawled under three of the four new joints were torn apart.
Now I am wondering when I put it together I might half been half hole out. As I was replacing them I start the back to bolts and tightened them how ever I could only get one bolt on the trans side so I back all bolts off and I was able to get them started . There no oil leak from transmission side and the flange has some play but not that bad maybe just a little more than engine side.
If any one has any idea what I have done wrong or is there more wrong with the machine .

Thank you in advance for any help
Herb

The problem is the engine alignment, that will take them out in no time. Take the rear disc out, check the bearings in the converter are okay(heave up and down on the stub the disc came off of) Then check the crankshaft end play. You need a dial indicator and a couple of bars to clamp them to. Then you need to clean the front disc good around the circumference and outer face. Then inspect the rear engine mounts. They must be sound and not pounded out on the surfaces. Then you slack the mounting bolts. Mount the indicator to the stub shaft and spin it around the circumference of the front disc. You need to shim up and shift side to side the rear of the engine until the run out is less than 0.090". Snug the rear bolts down and recheck. Adjust shims to get with in spec with tight bolts (the closer to zero the better).
Now set the indicator on the outer most face of the disc and spin the indicator around. You need to shim the front of the engine up or down and shift the front side to side to get that run out less than 0.026".

Thank you Bob , I notice play in the shaft of transmission ,what
be the maximum allowed there ? As for engine mounts how do
I check those ?
Thank you again

The stub is mounted to the converter and runs on Ball Bearings, expect normal amount of play/slight movement, not 1/8". As for the engine mounts take pry bar and lift up on the back of the engine and look for movement. The mounts sometimes break off the frame at the weld. Need to repair mounts first. Cat sold special hardened shims/washers hope they still do.

Thank you Bob , just one more question , could I have installed the joints a half hole out? When I was trying to install them I started with the first one on the engine side. Thinking that the bolts should bolt in on the trans side easily , so I bolted it in and tighten it and when I went to install the bolts on the transmission side.one would fit the other seemed to be approx half hole out . So like a dummy I loosely bolted all the joints in and then tightened them up.

No what you experienced was severe misalignment of the engine and the trans. Any time you take out a biscuit and it has a crack in the rubber the engine needs aligning.

I experienced this same thing on a 955, was '70 model, I forget the suffix now, but the engine had been out for overhaul. The ironic thing was a it was like my first day on the job, then they fixed it, or said they did happened again, I was fearing for my job, machine down, no work, so I stopped into the office on the way home and said in no way or shape or form was this my fault, mechanic finally got it right.... still sticks in my memory, I figured they'd have thought I was an abusive operator LOL !

Hey bob you were right! the left side rear bushing was ground down and broken. The other rear shows signs of wear the front seem good. Would you know where I can find the bushing? I measure the front one and get a machine shop to make a new on but I am told they are a different thickness.

Thanks for your help

Herb are you talking about washers?? They are shims for adjusting the height of the engine. Go to dealer and ask if they have them. Ask someone who is old enough to be a Walmart Greeter, young people don't know.
