A 1973 500C, while trying to start the machine the starter initially kicks in turns the diesel over two to three full revolutions, stops and goes about one full revolution. The positive cable becomes quite hot while something starts to buzz, like a relay or something. I have to unhook the positive cable or it seems that the starter will burn up or the cable starts smoking. The machine does run, is this because the battery isn"t strong enough to crank the machine? Thinking that maybe the starter was part of the problem I pulled it and set it up on the tracks hooked up and it engages as it should and none of the above mentioned symptoms occur. Seeking some advice and assistance Thanks

Sounds like the starter needs bushing and bearing, which you usually won't see without a load. I am not familiar with 500 IH but if you have a solenoid and the cable before and after the solenoid get hot it is the starter. If only cable before solenoid then the solenoid is probably the culprit.

yup, regular old Delco starter with the solenoid right on top. Only the positive cable gets hot, the solenoid and starter do not get hot or warm. The other thing is that you've got to unhook the positive cable because it will start to smoke, as this happens you get a good spark, as if a circuit is open or something, The negative cable if i don't unhook the positive well heat up but not like the positive one does

Nose cone bushing will not bind running under no load. Starter need to go to the shop for rebuild before you burn it up. Bushings,, new brushes, and clean it up .

Thanks for the advice, got it out might as well make sure that it is what it is before I put it back in, Cheers

Also check that every ground cable contact point is clean and shiny.

Most people neglect the contact points on cables and wires, but they are very important for the wiring system to work right.

I am working on the same type machine and same problem. I am having problems getting to the bolt on the bottom side of the starter. This dozer has a big belly pan under it. How did you get to the bolt on the bottom? Rick
