perkins 4236 engine

I bought a used SCAT steer 4 wheeled skidsteer that has a Perkins 4 cylinder diesel engine in it. The skid steer was made about 1991. I need to find the build number on the engine so I can order some parts.. The number is 2 letters followed by 5 numbers and I am told by a parts guy that is stamped in the block near the fuel injector pump. I have also read that it could be stamped on the opposite side of the block at the other end of the block from the fuel pump/radiator fan.. I am unable to find any numbers that correspond to what might be a build number, but the access is real limited due to the compact design of the skid steer.

Two questions:

Any idea where to look for the build number?
Any recommendations for a good parts service company that is a little more helpful? I am in Oregon.

I have one of those engines in a welder from about that vintage. I will look it over and see what I can find. It is at another location and I will be there over the weekend, will post back Monday evening with what I find.

I'm not 100% but I think the number is stamped on the flange that the injector pump is bolted to,Cat now own Perkins and should have any parts you need, there are loads of Perkins parts outlets all over the world, MF,JCB too many to mention,Google Perkins parts, also have a look on ebay.

Well, I looked mine over and could not find any numbers. Now mine is painted so could have missed something. This is a nice machined flat at the right rear of the engine just under the head. Scrapped off the paint but found nothing.
