Mystery Bolts in bottom of JD 450 HLR

I pulled the clutch pump in 450 straight this weekend to change seal and noticed input shaft was loose so I pulled front cover to check bearing. Bearing was bad and down in the bottom of the front cover were pieces of ball bearing cage and 2 what looked to be countersunk plow bolts. There was enough of one of them to measure and across the top of the head it is about 3/4" wide. Both are black in color and you can see machine marks across the top of head. There is not enough left to see if they have the square shoulder below the angle coming down from the head.
To those of you who have been inside a HLR trans do they use a fastener like this anywhere? I have gone thru all the parts schematics and descriptions and cannot find any pictures or descriptions of bolts like this anywhere. When I first drained trans oil I also found 3 little metal clips like those that are used to hold a click type writing pen to your pocket, so maybe someone has been dropping stuff down the fill tube prior to me getting this tractor.
Any Ideas?

I am going to guess they are rivets that hold the ring gear to the carrier. They are flat headed as I recall. Only flat headed hardware in there that I know of. Probably from a prior failure. Steve. www.sadygerts.com

Thanks for your thoughts Steve. When I do the
steering clutches I will check out the ring gear to
make sure

There is no way those countersunk head bolts / rivits could have come from another place than front of transmission.. They would have to have come thru the suction filter in the bottom sump of the transmission.. I don't see that happening.. It's still a mystery...

Sorry Roy but I disagree. The screen has nothing to do with return oil. Since the 450 series have the HLR, gear box and bevel gear compartments all connected and running the same oil it is very possible. There is a large hole between the bevel gear compartment and the transmission and another between the transmission and the HLR to allow oil to seek its own level when filling. This also provides a path for parts from one compartment to pass into the others. The screen is only for oil being picked up from the sump going to the pump. Furthermore there is nothing related to the HLR compartment that would look like that. Steve. www.sadygerts.com

In my first contact with this person it was stated the bolts were inside the front cover.. That's quite a jump to get into the front cover from the floor of the HLR housing past the sump and filter sheetmetal cover.. What ever....

No disrespect intended Roy. I apologize. I read the post as the parts being in the front compartment of the HLR, however it does appear that they may have been behind the front cover in which case I agree. I don't see how they could have gotten from the HLR housing into that front cover. I don't recall any passages. If they were in the HLR then I thought it was worth being aware of. Again I apologize. Steve.
