John Deere 555 transmission

I am working on a John Deere 555 crawler loader for a neighbor and regretting every minute of it. At first he took the transmission apart because it only moved in reverse. Second time he took it apart because it only moved in third gear forward and reverse. Now he asked me to fix it. I have taken apart the selector valve and have gained second gear, but still dont have first. Main pressure and applied pressure are the same around 285 psi at wide open throttle. It moves for a short time when its cold but it wont move in first forward or reverse. second and third will spin tracks when driven into a pile. Most of my experience is with ag equipment not industrial, but in my past experiences is that if it doesn"t work immediately after a repair it is because something got assembled wrong or overlooked.

Could be either assembled wrong or overlooked... If everything there that should be replaced is replaced, There goes the grandsons college fund.. That's gotta be the worst transmission to overhaul that I've ever done.. Take a look at the trans pump, mounted on the side of the case.. Maybe but no guarantees that's the problem...I'm more inclined to think clutchpack or sealing ring internal leakage due to some gears having higher pressures than others.. Anymore , I'd take a sound pistol whipping than do another one of those British Twin Disc transmissions...

I am with Roy , that is not a forgiving transmission, meaning that if everything that needs replacing is not replaced results will be problems. Some power shifts can be patched not that one. You probably have a bad shaft or clutch pack seal.

pressures are all the same in first, second, and third, and they match main pressure with in a couple of psi. Maybe I will have him come over and take it apart since he has done it twice, the way you guys talk it is as bad as doing a pto clutch on a deere 3255 with a cab and loader.
