There is a coupler between the two units.. If the splines in the coupler are worn out , chances are the shafts are also worn to the point of replacement.. Big friggin' job, Husky... Nose, sheetmetal and bellypan comes off.. Drain hydraulics , disconnect pump lines, Pull engine with radiator and hydraulic pump as an assembly.. If dozer , pull dashboard off, If loader , work around it.. Reverser lines , linkages, unbolt side frame bolts [side and underneath] fasteners rear of reverser, pull it out.. There is the coupler or what is left of it.. Best to get a Tech manual when messing around with reverser and tranny for specs and assembly pictures.. Back at Hine Tractor Sales, with all the proper lifting devices , I could have the engine out in just over an hour [at age 24]... Now at 62, probably half a day.....Ahhh... Those were the days...

RUN RUN RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN. That machine is a money pit. Just speaking from experience. Go get a Case, you will be much happier.

Sounds like it's ready for the scrap-yard. No cost-effective way to fix. It probably needs a new output shaft in the reverser, a new input shaft in the transmission. It is also likely the reverser case is loose against the transmission case and both need replacement or a very difficult repair. Once those two bottom bolts get loose, and the dowels wobble - it's all over.

Just figured I'd add this. I've seen a few with ruined splines that got a temp-fix. I'd never do it considering all the labor. That being said - I've seen people weld two new couplers together and then cut down just enough to fit in there and grab a bit of new unworn splines that were not used by the original shorter coupler. It certainly is not a good fix. It IS good enough to get a machine to work for awhile and sell at auction.
