JD Hyd Pump

I'm not trying to sound sour but I'm looking for some helpful insight....Early - mid 70's John Deere 310 Backhoe, have had it for almost 15 years now. Probably put in the area of 1500 hours on it, normal maintenance for an older machine but have had the JD dealer rebuild the pump twice for leaking and it's started again. Less than 5 hours on the rebuild this time before hyd oil started blowing out past the shaft seal. Using JD brand oil too.. I'm checking a few things to try and say the pump isn't the problem but it's not looking good. Reman? Just buy New? Look for a newer machine?? $6-800 every 5 hours is going to get expensive.....

Thanks for the replies! I checked the black nylon line and can blow thru it both to the machine and into the pump (hear air leaking, from the seal?) Checked the top line that goes thru the oil cooler, cooler is clear and if I put air pressure thru the line into the case I can get fluid pushing out thru the top of the pump, so I'd say it's fine. This leaves me to think it's definitely in the pump. My local JD dealer did the pump both times, the guy who did it said everything looked ok the day I picked it up... Going to pull it out after work and take it back to the dealer and see what happens...

A pump repaired properly is not going to leak out the shaft. I'd put the blame on the place that did the work and not Deere. If it's leaking after 5 hours of use - why isn't the place that did the work making good on it? When I worked as a Deere mechanic - we either guaranteed our work - or - told the owner the part was too worn out to repair. If the pump housing is undamaged where the quad-ring and backup washer goes, and the shaft has no groove worn into it, and the shaft-bearings are adjusted properly - it is not going to leak.

If it was rebuilt right it should not leak for many years.. Replacing the shaft , seals and bearings makes all the oil sensitive areas new.. Also the oil leak-off line has to be connected.. If there is no leak-off line, that might be the problem.. If there, check for kinks in the line.. Usually the line is a black nylon type construction..
