cat D7E engine balancer install

Just install cylinders heads, now need to install engine balancer time it to crank. Problems. there are no markings on flywheel to time balancer to. nothing to see when #1 is TDC, But on #4 TDC (180 out) there are markings that line up. What is the right way to time the thing?

update... found 2 teeth on fly wheel with 3 dots in each. Idler gear with and A on one tooth. Thats what I plan on lining up in the morning. Discover the driven gear was not in time with Idler gear. Adjusted that timing and lock down with bolt the assembly.

Forget about the marks on the gears. Take the small square cover off the top of the flywheel cover. Put ANY piston on TDC, with balancer gears not engaged, turn the weights until they are down and lock them. Push up the gears and bolt bearing into place then remove the lock bolt.
The ballancers turn at twice the speed of the crankshaft. They always are down when any piston is on TDC.

Your welcome Steve, The reason I said to forget the marks is the idler has an odd number of teeth(hunting gear) and it is all you can see with the cover on. If you just time up to it's mark you could be any place. If you are building the engine with all gears exposed use the marks. You will know if it's timed right when you start it and rev the engine, do that slowly the first time.
