Someone tell me I'm not on drugs .What tractor can you remove the dead axle on by drilling behind it threading put a grease fitting in and press it out with a grease gun ? Caterpillar D6D -C or International TD 15 ? Thanks Jim

I've had the dead axel out of a D6 and you can't do what your talking about with one of them.......or if you can I'd love for somebody to show me how it's done............ That said I've never had one out of a TD15, so if I had to choose one or the other from your list of choices, the TD15 would have to be my pick.

Not something that would apply to any version of IH TD15 that I am aware of. The dead axles on TD15's go clear across the tractor supporting both track frames.

Had a D7 and it take a special press and attachments. Have seen them drill hole in casting and tread for fittings, it took a 50 ton pump to get it out. Hope this answers your question.

Sorry certainly not any version of the international td 15. That dead axel is supported by c shaped castings with large c shaped clamps. Looks like it would slide out sideways but they made that also impossible by placing a dowel pin in one side. Requires removing both track frames and the c clamps. And like Wayne said certainly not the Cat so do not know what you are thinking.

I worked as a heavy equipment mechanic for several years but not for the last twenty or so years and have forgotten some of the highlites but talked to a buddy last night and he thought it was a broken front on a pull scraper that we took out that way instead of dead axle and it may have been .But I thought it was a dead axle. I've burned up to many brain cells. Thanks to all who replied Jim

My memory is kind of fuzzy on this but I seem to recall it's the Cats where you can tap into the center of the rear case and get behind the dead axle to push it out.

We had to rent a 100 ton porta-press to remove the dead axle from a D6. When it finally budged it sounded like a shotgun going off. No grease gun has that kind of pressure.

When we installed the new bearing on the new dead axle we had to put the axle in the deep-freezer to shrink it and boil the bearing in oil to expand it. Then it went on, no problem.
