Oil pours from rear of engine on TD 6

When I start my TD 6, I get a slow drip at the bottom of the engine, toward the rear. When the engine is good and warm, oil starts pouring from engine. Like a quart in 3 minutes; it is a steady stream of oil. I thought it must be a rear main seal; however, when it is cold it leaks little. Could there be a problem with the oil pan at the rear of the engine?; or is it the rear main seal. Is the rear main seal made of a rope, and what do you have to do to get the old seal out and the new seal in? I appreciate input.
Other: On white/gray smoke from number 4 cylinder; after operating for a short time, the smoke ceased, and the engine operated much better. I loosened the injector line and the engine dropped in RPM, like the other three cylinders -good news.
After shutting the engine off, and later starting the engine on gas, and switching to diesel once again smoke came out the exhaust and the engine operated as before. What would be the reason for this? I think for whatever reason, the injector was working and then plugged again -perhaps the starting, and then switching to diesel -don't know. do think it is the injector. The valves are okay. Anyone have input on this?
what is the best way to clean the injector, or should I use much Diesel Kleen?

injector, working or not would cause white smoke
which is telling of a water leak in the head gasket
or cracked head. are these problems new or did you
get the tractor this way? best of luck.

rom the first time I had purchased this dozer. I have had the dozer for two months; have not had time to work with it, and next month will work more with it. When I start and run the dozer on gas there is no white/gray smoke. When I switch to diesel, then this smoke emits. When I loosen the injector connection, there is no change in the RPM, and the smoke disappears. When I tighten the connection, the smoke emits.
So, I don't see where there is a leaking head gasket, or cracked head. And let's not forget; when the engine had operated, and I drove the dozer a ways, the smoke quit, the RPM dropped when loosening the connection to injector, and the engines performance had improved, for it was now operating on four cylinders, not three. After shutting the engine off; waiting a period of an hour or more, and then starting the engine with gas, and then switching to diesel the smoke began again. So, would we say the injector emitted fuel, and then later became plugged again?javascript:emoticon('')

Sounds like a leaking injector, one that's not spraying a good pattern. When the engine warms up some, it will fire on the dribbling diesel without smoking. You can pull the injector and have the spray pattern checked by a pump shop, it's not expensive.

You might be able to pull the injector and then put your injector line on backwards pointing over the track so you can watch the spray pattern when you turn the engine over. I'm not sure if you can do this on IH, but you can on an older Caterpillar dozer.

Thank you. I will attempt that and see what happens. It may be good to clean the injector. A person told me to clean with diesel only; is that true?
Oh, does anyone know about the oil streaming out from the rear bottom of the engine. I thought it would be the rear main seal; however, when the engine is first started it does not leak much -maybe a drop every 15 - 30 seconds. When the engine is good and warm, or hot the oil streams; like a quart of oil in 3 minutes.
Could it be the oil pan at the rear that is leaking? Read the above on description and feed back will be appreciated. Thanx.
If part of a track is stuck/curved; how may one straighten it?
Thanx again

Drive it into some standing water, it'll loosen the rust in the pins after driving it around a while. Works better than anything else.

I can't help with the oil leak, I'm not familiar with those engines.

Getting the injector rebuilt would be best, IMO.

Not familiar with your particular machine but it does sound like it could still be your rear main seal.Reason being is that when oil warms it gets thinner, thus more oil running out versus cold makes sense.

I began pulling the injector; however once the bolts, two nuts were removed, I could not budge the injector. what is the way to pull the injector? More than likely, the injector has never been pulled since 1952.
on the rear seal: There is the spring that is located just below the rear oil pan, and I cannot get to the bolts at the rear of the oil pan. [b:d9d6340e91]Does anyone have information on this?
Thanx in advance.[/b:d9d6340e91]
