Hi Guys,

While waiting for the weather to warm up so i can dislodge my pressure washer from the ice....I decided to dig into the long standing winch problem I have on my 350 dozer. I started with the actuator where the long lever is, in the operator's position, as in the last few years I have noticed that it moves way beyond where it should stop. Well, I started by removing the cover, found it was almost empty, hardly any fluid and decided to pull the whole thing. Removed the hydraulic lines and out came brownish colored water, sludge, and maybe a little brake fluid. Mmmm...this is going to need an entire rebuild.

So it's all apart on the tailgate of my truck and I found the key stock piece on the main shaft inside the housing was broken, sheared right off, which explains the full 150 degrees of travel of the handle, and in the bottom was this brown sludge.

Removed both piston housings, springs plungers etc and have them all boiling in a detergent/water solution on the wood stove. I'll leave it there for a few days to boil out all the crap, loosen the gasket material etc. then dry them and coat with brake fluid immediately so nothing rusts, kind of like seasoning a cast iron skillet. In the meantime, I'll find the gasket kit for this and when the mud finally leaves the driveway, I'll dig into the winch end of this...pulling the side cover and removing all hydraulic parts for cleaning and inspection.

Just thought some of you might find this useful one day.

Cheers

Paul
