Kobelco SK60 Fault codes

Last December when it got cold my stepping motor seemed to have trouble finding the start position. I lubed up the cable and arm on the motor and it was better. Put it in the shed and now when I try to start it after sitting in this cold winter it will not even attempt to turn over. When it was cold a few days ago the stepping motor had the same problem and wouldn"t find the start position. After manually moving the arm and more lubing and some warmer weather it seems to be finding the start after normal cycling. Now when I turn on the key the stepping motor cycles and then stops.

It is showing low fuel fault 15 and then a charge 16 showing the battery. It"s not low in fuel as the indicator shows and I think the batteries are OK. The battery symbol always shows before starting.

Could the false low fuel and the nothing when I move the key to the start position be from low batteries? Usually with low batteries you still get a click or something.

I agree with the other poster that the batteries are a good place to start, its no use thinking that the batteries are good you need to be sure,it only takes one of the two batteries to run down to get a dead responce, are the work lights bright, could there been any pests nesting on the machine,it must be fairly modern machine if it's got OBD.the cable freezing usually means there is water in it,are the rubber boots good on each end,has someone been over zelous with a pressure washer,we rig a hose for the airline to blow the water out,I think you should make sure that the battries have not gone low over the winter and then go from there, what model of the SK60 is it,there must be a half a dozen models, good luck

Thanks for the replies. I wasn't suspecting battery's. It's a 2 battery system hook together to make 24V. I had just put one new 1 in last fall and the original was fine at that time. I visually inspected them and all looked good. When I turned the key from on to start nothing was happening not even the dimming of lights.

Anyways I tested the battery's and 1 showed dead. I removed it and sure enough the bottom and back end had blown out from being frozen. Installed a new battery and fired right up with everything reading normal.

Now the question is why is the same battery failing and the original older 1 is fine. If something was draining the system would it not pull both battery's down the same? The only difference is I have a 12V radio running off the second battery but it was off. Is it possible the maintenance of the radio can drain 1 battery and not effect the first 1?
Again thanks for the input.

The only thing I can think of is that the battery that froze has lost it's charge,a fully charged battery can withstand freezing to about 90° below where by a half charged battery can freeze at zero, sometimes there is a 12V supply taken off from one battery for the radio, the radio needs a trickle of power to hold the memory,it could be enough to drain the battery over time,to start the machine and let it charge is one option or a trickle charger, some people with boats and the like use solar chargers, very low output but enough to compensate for any power loss from the batteries,in case it wasn't frost ensure you new battery is fitted securely with its hold down brackets to prevent it moving about and shorting out on the frame.
