Looking at a used one. Any weak points with this machine? Are parts still available? Is this a 2 stick setup?

I have a 655A, and a neighbor has a 555B, and they are the same age. His is two stick, mine is four. So I'm thinking it could be either way. We both are happy with our machines. No problem with parts so far.

One of the loader tractors that we use where I work is a 555. It has with a zillion hours on it and it still doing the job.

My 555 is 1980 vintage. 2 stick hoe. Haven't needed many parts, but what I've needed was available new.

Solid machine, fast and powerful hydraulics, but IMO too fast and powerful for the frame of the machine. Saw so many with plates and welds on backhoe boom and loader frame. To my knowledge parts are still available.

Good machines. If it has a torque converter check it out to see if it pulls the engine down when running the roads in high gear. I think the one I had the converter was good but it didn't seem too powerful when going down the road when you got to even a small grade it slowed way down.

I owned 2 Cases' and they were both good hoes. But my buddy digs for the gas company and loves his 555 . He says it has the fastest hyd of all hoes.

I think they could be had with 2 or 4 sticks.
Some late B's were C models with different sheet metal, for some reason they switched manufacture to a new plant before they were ready to switch to the C. Look at the kingpins on the front axle, I think it's 4 bolts on the later ones, for a quick way to check. Any NH construction dealer should be able to punch in the serial# and see if it comes before or after the break, even tell you the day and shift it was completed on.

There's some o-rings that can go bad and cause weak shifting of the shuttle, but you have to nearly disassemble the hole machine to get to them.

With the extand-a-hoe you can balance it on the back tires, if you do it will walk through mud most new machines with the wide tires wouldn't think about dragging themselves through.

Hydraulics are slower than those on a lot of newer machines, but much more powerful. If you can hold down the other end it will outlift a 580SM Case.

I bought a worn out 1979 2WD 555, Jan 2011, it is an awesome machine. The 3 cylinder diesel is great on fuel, maybe a bit under powered.
The extenda-hoe comes in handy quite often. You will find the hydraulics are very good, tough machine!
