Ford 550 loader backhoe with trans problems

Hello All,
I have an old ford 550 loader backhoe, and she just doesn't want to go.
Let me elaborate on that, sometimes I will put it in gear and she will want to move and drive around then after useing it for a bit (just moving forward and back maybe 3 or 4 times) She just doesn't want to move in any gear in any direction. This old gal has the 4 speed with shuttle shift. Any ideas on this. I am thinking it could be blocker valves? Or it almost seems like the clutches are slipping, but why only sometimes? What do you guys think? Just hope its not a torque converter. Any ideas would help.

Thank You in Advance,
Brandon

I would first change out the fluid and the filters.
Refill to correct level run it to operating temperature and see how it acts. That don't help,
Their is two test ports located just under center of tractor close to the back side of the oil pan in the area of the converter. I don't remember off top of my head what the pressures are but you should be able to get that from your New Holland dealer. Check that ! The pressure readings will tell you what the verdict is. Hope this helps. Good Luck...

Would it be ok to flush this type of transmission with kerosene? Just thinking it might flush some junk out. Or would it damage something?

I just read an old post on a different forum where the guy had the same problem. The tractor had sat unused for some time. It turned out to be 2 pins that keep it from shifting above a certain RPM had gotten stuck and would not allow the shuttle valve to operate.

I would take that small plate off the bottom of the clutch housing and feel around for a steel line with a plug on the end.. That is the oil pressure tap to find transmission oil pressures.. If memory serves , that pressure should be at least 135 lbs.. It should be the same in fwd or rev. I would run a hose from that fitting to a gauge so I could read it from operators seat.. Try putting the transmission into forward with brakes on , torque converter stall in forward , at about half throttle.. If the blocker valve is working properly it won't shift out of neutral.. If it wont shift out of neutral the pins are out [ extended ] to keep the spool from shifting.. This is because if the low idle being too high.. It should shift at idle with no problem.. If you need to access that blocker valve , it can be accessed from under fuel tank and under top plate of clutch housing.. Most of those older fuel tanks come out fairly easily as most people don't reinstall the back bolts underneath..
