102 Galion grader hydraulics

I have recently acquired a Galion 102 grader and the hydraulics
have me baffled. It has a huge 7 spool control valve which is setup
as closed centre and unless one of the levers is being operated the
relief valve is releasing. There is no return line from the centre
gallery on the end opposite from the pressure line from the pump.
There is a plug there so I can install one. Every thing looks like it
was built that way, nothing suggesting it has been removed. Any
ideas anyone?
 
Where is the return line from the valve back to the tank located? What kind of pump is used? I also sent you an e-mail. Did you receive it? Let me know either way? J.
 
Contact Galion; they might be able to furnish you an hydraulic schematic, or at least a manual.

I had a Galion 102 with an IH UD14 engine. Used it about 3 months cleaning drainage ditches then sold it again for a profit because I needed the money.

Really like the hydraulics on that grader. I set the blade at an angle, put the leading end down against large rocks and raised the blade and it would roll those rocks right up on top of the ground so we could drag them off the field. Worked better than a bulldozer for that job.
 
It would be worth a try I guess. It would be Komatsu I would need to talk to now.
I see I have my numbers reversed. I have a 201 here, not a 102. It is powered by a IH UD9.

The pump appears to be a gerotor type. I expect the valve is a one size fits all, because it has far more capacity then that pump would put out. The return line from the valve to the tank is in about the middle of the bank and as such only the upper and lower gallery vent into it.
 
Turns out I had the info I was looking for right here, in a reprinted owners manual I bought from Jen Sales. If all else fails, read the directions right? While is doesn't call it that, what it describes is a closed center system. The system runs under full pressure all the time with all the flow going through the relief valve until one of the valves is operated, which is exactly what I see in this machine. Closed center systems are the standard today but they use variable displacement pumps that run under pressure but only supply flow on demand. I'm wondering now if this system was unique to Galion or was it common way back then. I have never seen it before.
