$10,000 LOL Thats not saving it but making someone rich.

It"s a shame that so many people think that just because a piece of equipment is old that it"s automatically an antique and worth BIG BUCKS. About 6 years ago I watched an old tow behind drum roller, and a steel wheeled, single shank ripper (would probably have taken a D6 to pull) go to scrap because the scrap yard owner wanted a couple of thousand for each one. In the end he probably got a couple of hundred for the both of them when he could have made at least a few hundred more just by asking a fair price. In this case, yes it"s a nice little machine, and looks like it"s at least received a paint job, but it"s not $10,000 worth of paint.

yep--that's a bit high--but it does have a nice paint job!must be a 3j or 5J model with a tool bar blade.

Price is a little steep, has anyone spoke to the owner? Probably not, anyone can ask anything for what they have, not a done deal until money changes hands. If you were looking for what looks to be an apparently nice condition, D2, with some nice accessories, winch, tool bar blade, generator/lights, electric start pony, with battery box, radiator guard, and whatever else I'm missing, what would you offer, say 7K ? its worth 5K easily as is, you don't see these like that very often, its a nice tractor with what is has on it, just a little high on the price. See how many complete tool bar blades you can find for these era caterpillar tractors, I'm sure those are in every scrap yard somewhere right ? LOL ! Thats an extremely useful set up, even if you don't have the tool bar, you have the main part, you could fab all kinds of implements for it. Someone may have gone through it and finished it to make it look nice. It has many factory accessories. Yes, you should measure the U/C, 50% means nothing until it checks out as half worn by measuring. Benefit of the doubt here, you'll know if its a polished t*rd, if you know anything about crawlers, like is often seen at auctions with contractor equipment run through a paint shop, I'd bet this is not one of those. It ain't perfect either, but what is ? As is, potentially a very versatile tractor. There are some things to tip you off. I just can't see trash talking a tractor like that, one which no one has actually looked at, sorry.... maybe afterward. FYI, don't mean to rustle anyone's feathers but.... it might be misconstrued that way LOL !

It's not mine, and I don't have the 10 large that the guy wants. I know that the value is around the 5 large, but I hate to se it sitting in the snow, with fresh paint...

Cat didn't make U models in 1940--maybe the owner has the wrong year?

I was thinking the same thing, it does look like a 5U, late and or end of production with whats on it, thinking about this again, you could still buy a money pit for 3-5K, and be into it for 10K. There is a brass data tag on the side of the seat, which should correlate to an earlier model, maybe I am wrong but didn't they change to the aluminum tags, especially the later 5U or last series ?

That little tractor would be perfect at this place, skid logs on the opposite side of the ridge here or reach in to where logs are with little disturbance, tool bar would be great for tillage implements, subsoiling especially, in addition to the dozer blade. Small operator area for a large person, but still a very functional and useful tractor that would pay for itself if correctly represented per the ad.

That is a "U" model 1947-up. You can tell by the location of the air cleaner and exhaust. Has the goodies too, correct winch, #41 hydraulics, Cat tool bar blade and the special no dent seat tank. Easy to get close to that money if you were to assemble the goodies to build one.

Three thousand dollar dozer on a good day. No wonder it is still sitting there.

Lots of over priced stuff on CL. I don't know where people come up with their prices from, but that is a bit much. I can get those old Cats for $2000 in good running shape. The paint job is meaningless and usually means the mechanical side of it is shaky..

That is a "U" model, you can tell by the location of the exhaust and air cleaner.

Has the right "goodies", #41 hydraulic control, Cat tool bar blade and Hyster D4N winch.

Would get close to that number if you had to round up those goodies and add them to a base tractor.

I'd put it in the $5k to $7.5k if engine and undercarriage checks out.

Billy--i would guess that it is an earlier U model as it has the thinner fenders with the rolled edge where the later ones had 3/8 inch thick plate fenders with no rolled edge.----OM ??
