I am looking at a small dirt buggy that the military used to drop out of airplanes in remote places. Does anyoneknow if there is a parts source for them somewhere?I am thinking about restoreing it and I know that some parts are most likely going to be needed. maybe a web site for the machines. Thanks sam

I found the site at the link the other night for downloading old military manuals. If you know the military's part/model/whatever number on it you might find, at least, a parts list for the thing. Good luck.

Thanks NCWayne. I am goingto have to go look at it again and get more info. I was hopeing to find a picture of it on here but no luck so far. Thanks again.

You are probably looking at a LaPlante-Choate Model CAB-1 scraper. If so, go for it as they are as rare as hen"s teeth. They were designed for use behind the Clark Airborne crawlers of WW2. Although characterized as air-droppable, I have seen no proof that it ever happened after about 15 years of interest in this subject. The crawlers were hauled in small numbers in gliders and sometimes C-46/47 cargo planes. The best source for info on this equipment is Ray Rigaud at syltech.net as he has restored several, including at least 1 scraper-good pix on his site also. Good luck with it.

you are the first person I have seen post about that brand scraper, I have one but it is a 4 yard model its a great unit except that it is a little narrow which makes it load easier but can be tipped over due to the narrow wheel stance, I even got a parts book with it

Case Nutty 1660-you probably scare the devil out of that little pan when you put a horse that size on it, LOL! Found a video of Ray at work with a more typical CA-1, 21 Hp crawler (all of ~43 Hp with push cat). BTW, CA-1s were the "great-grandparents" of the Case 300/310 cralwers via US Trac, then ATC TerraTrac, through a Marc Rothjman (sp?).

smallercrawler, thanks for the info, I had heard their was some kind of "history" with ATC, as for the scarper the 970 loads it ok but really is not to much for it as traction is the real problem, this unit was sold new with a D-4 again thanks for the info I will check out the vid as well

Way Cool vid!! I wish my unit had the wide rear stance on the rear like the one in the vid, those military units must have been made for World War II and or the Korean War? again thanks for the info very interesting to me

I have heard the air drop story many time too. They were air hauled, not air dropped, along with the CA-1 and the D4 Letourneau. We had no air drop capable planes for that type of loading or dropping in WWII, so no way any of them were air dropped.
Ray's site has some pics of them loaded in gliders and C47's.
Unless you have a fascination for that particular scraper, I might consider selling it to a collector and buying something newer.

I guess I said this post wrong. The machine isn't a crawler it is a two wheeled tractor unit that pulls a pan. It looks a lot like a real small 627 cat scraper. The motor is small 4 cyc about the size of a A farmall eng. It has two drive wheels that has road grader size tires on it. It has a cable lift system on it and is a 2 yard pan. Thanks for all of the replys.

sam, like this one? Sorry can't get link.

If not, search youtube for Letourneau D4 Ken Avery.

Thanks! My computer wont load you tube up to watch. I am still on dial up and it takes 15 to 20 min to load up a 1 min. segment on you tube. Thanks again.

Thanks for the vid. It took 2 hours to load the clip and I got to look at it oneframe at a time but at least I got to look at it and know more about it than I did before. That is for sure the machine that I was looking at. Made the deal tonight. What a birthday present for myself. The man even has the books for it. Now all I have to do is convince my wife that her birthday gift to me is just the one i wanted. The thing that I am going to have the most hard time of is convinceing her that the parts i buy for it is for her birthday present in march. If I can pull this off I will be the MAN. If not I will be the dead man.
