OC3 questions

I'm in the process of restoring 3 OC3 crawlers. Two have loaders and one has a bulldozer blade. I'm new to working on these. I have the instruction manuals and parts books but have some questions.

Can I use a modern motor oil like Rotella 10-40 in the crankcase. Or should I stay with a non-detergent like SAE30, 20, or 10?

I'm repainting them (not for show) and I'm thinking of using either Rustoleum Old Caterpillar Yellow or the New Caterpillar Yellow. Which would be the more correct choice?

Am I right in assuming I can use Warren 90 weight GL-1 mineral gear lube? I would like to substitute a Napa gear oil for this - does anyone know the comparable designation for this?

Thank you in advance for any help.

Modern high detergent oil won't hurt a thing IF the engine in your Hercules engine is fairly clean inside. If not - I'd stick with either non-detergent or . . . mix some non-detergent with some detergent oil 50/50 and then keep a close eye on the dip-stick to see how fast the oil turns black. The late two IXB3s I pulled apart on an OC3 and a HG both had 2"s of mud/sludge in the oil pan and crankcase. I reached in with a scraper and took out a bucket full of it. After that, I've been using Shell Rotella 30W and all has been fine.

In regard to the GL1 oil in the Clark transaxle? It needs either 80W-90W GL1 gear oil or non-detergent 30W motor oil. What used to be simply called "SAE mineral oil." 80-90W gear oil is the same viscosity as 30-40W motor oil. The important thing is not to have any EP additives in it since they will plug up the wet brake bands and make the work awful. The same goes for any crawler with that same Clark transaxle including Oliver HG, OC3 and some OC4s, Terratracs, and some Cases e.g. the 310.

The GL1 standard is more-or-less dead and no longer monitored. So anybody can call an oil "GL1" with proving it for any sort of certification.

I use the GL1 from Tractor Supply. It is sold as "Traveller Ford Tractor All Mineral 90W Transmission Oil." Last year it was $22 for a 5 gallon pail. Now it's $17.99 for 2 gallons.
