JD BHL 500C starter issue. Wiring and parts diagram??

Hello all. I have either a 1982 or 1984 John Deere BHL. I tried to start it with brand new batteries and just "click" So, I call my buddy he says "tap it with a hammer, you don"t use it enough and you need to start it more, keep things freed up." it fires up, I move some dirt, I shut it off. 2 weeks later, click, yap, click tap; I take the key out, tap it with my head hung low and tapped it again. The pinion gear flew out and it just kept turning over. I ran for the shop and got a 9/16 wrench and disconnected the batter. 45 seconds in and wires were getting HOT. So, I tear it off and the solenoid is frozen. My family pet dies and I like to bury them deep. I get a new solenoid and bench testing it with a starter jukebox, the pinion spins, but never flys out. Take solenoid off, pinion flys out. Fork is free to both max. JD has a series of solenoids and I"m tired of not knowing what they do and I want to know which way the fork goes. Both ways when retracted it clears the flywheel. One side has a gusset on the fork, other side is open. Could someone please help with an exploded view of the starter and the proper wiring?? Pet is still on ice! Thank you, Steve
