Cat 910 wheel loader info

Looking at buying a 1975 Cat 910 wheel loader with 3204 engine. Good or bad choice? Any experience with one of these would be appreciated! Thanks

Cat equipment hold it's value . We have Cat 518 skidders with 3204 engines and they run good with very little down time . Don't get them hot because they have a reputation to crack heads inside the valves. Both trans and diff. have a long life .

one of the most commonly used loaders in log yards, where they get a lot of abuse from operators & logs & mud. Very tough machine.

They are good machines like Cats generally are. The early 3204 engine only has one compression ring and a one piece-twin ridge oil ring per piston. I don't know what kind of a rookie they hired to do this design when most diesels have three compression rings and two oil rings?? The 3204 is dependable but blow-by and lower compression in the engine happens much sooner than in other diesels. A few years later the design was upgraded but 1975 is the early design. I wouldn't hesitate to buy what you're looking at but check how much blow-by the engine has when it's fully warmed up.

Cat never had 3 ring pistons in the 3200 series but IPD has 3 ring pistons for them. A 3204 in a 910 is OK because it's not trying to suck every ounce of power out of the engine. I don't think the 910 has a turbo but Cat were always good long life loaders. The 3204 isn't the best Cat engine but was very common. They don't have sleeves so if you rebuild, you have to bore them out. Later versions were direct injection and easier starting.

Thirty seven year old loader, just do not expect too much. Probably had a hard way to go all it,s life. As the others have stated not one of the best cat engines and you could be buying one that is past being rebuilt without a lot of money. Guess it just depends on how much you are giving and what you want to do.

Forgot to mention that I missed out on a good 930 loader for 15G only because I had my mine on buying tractors, and it sold quickly . Boy what a mistake that was , the guy is still running around my neighborhood making all kinds of money on snow removal.
